One important factor you want to remember about the carat weight in diamonds is the "magic numbers."
In the diamond industry, pricing reports come out each week by people who research the marketplace to keep a pulse on what certain qualities are selling for on the market based on supply and demand.
These pricing reports are primarily broken down into categories of weight. As diamonds reach certain magic numbers in weight, their price per carat increases. These magic numbers in weight are:
-
0.50 ct.
-
0.70 ct.
-
0.90 ct.
-
1.00 ct.
-
1.50 ct.
-
2.00 ct.
and every half carat increase in weight after that!
There can also be slight premiums ranging from 7-12% on carat weights that are hard to find or in high demand. Examples of this would be diamonds in the .80 ct. range, .95-.99 ct., 1.25 ct.~1.49 ct., 1.70 ct. ~1.99 ct.
